Group Grope

Mom had a big day of group activities. The OT had her in the kitchen with another lady making Greek Salad. Imagine this, Julia in the kitchen with a dull knife. Her right hand slicing and left hand steadying. Outcome perfectly sliced onions. Gaylen was super impressed. After lunch, Mom and I went to group speech therapy. The group consisted of a few other stroke patients and a young man with a brain injury from a motorcycle accident. Lots of discussion about every ones accidents and how they "arrived" at Herrick. In PT today, mom took several steps unassisted -- no walker, no cane! Gaylen and I continue to bug mom about sitting up in her chair during meals and as much as possible during the day. She would much rather lay down but it is time for her to be sitting up. Monday will involve more group therapy. She will be participating in a group Neuro-therapy sessions on Monday afternoon and now everyday after lunch is group speech therapy -- And if you know mom she is not excited about these "group" activities.

Dear Julia,

Brian and I thought of you a lot today up in Geyserville. It was beautiful, if a bit hot, and we picked and cooked lots of tomatoes. I am glad to hear that you had real success with your Greek Salad. I chopped a lot of onions, carrots, and celery today to make and can two quarts of tomato sauce. I sure wish you had been there to help with the chopping and I am delighted to know that those famous kitchen hands are coming back and that we will be able to count on you in the future.

As you probably know, I will be having dinner with your daughter in Houston tomorrow evening and I hope to get the full scoop. I am, as you might imagine, gone all week in Houston and in Bozeman with clients. Brian is going to try to come up and see you. We need to bring you some tomatoes and some love.

We are terrible with games, but Brian would like your help in planning out a driving trip that we both want to take with you next year in Arizona.

Let me know when you feel comfortable with phone calls. I need to hear your voice.

John and Brian

OK, so our brilliant comment of Day 12 and the Butter Cup Butter Cup entry disappeared into cyberspace when Eric's computer froze. Never trust the laptop of a son. Or daughter. Or neighbor, I guess.
In any case, we tried out the tongue twisters, remembered with fondness the time Cindy Brady got teased because she had a lisp and her brother Bobby smacked the Hinton boy. Then we tried ToyBoat ToyBoat ToyBoat, to very little success. And She Sells Seashells by the Sea Shore....Then we had another glass of wine.
And, Brian & John, yes, we'll take you on sometime in a contest of this ilk.
Julia, we're glad to bring a game down to visit with you! How about Cranium? The name seems most appropriate. love to you and to your amazing girls marge & bill

Dearest Julia --

What good news, all around! I am so proud of you; but then, all that tenacity and clarity you bring to other endeavors, are doing well by you today. Huzzah! And I don't know what's more inspring: your progress; your children's love; or the insightful loving comments of all your friends and family. Finally: I get to come see you this coming Saturday! I hope to bring something delicious for lunch. And I'm also going to bring a DVD from my recent trip to Ireland. I know it sounds dreadful, but it's a homemade gem: lots of fun. Julia, you are in my loving thoughts every day. See you soon! -- Caitlin

Hi Julia,

Well I had dinner with one of your two spectacular daughters this evening in Sugarland. It was hot and humid but nobody seemed to mind. Don't tell anyone but I think Gaylen is becoming a Texan!

Your lovely grandaughter took a shine to me once she learned that I bore some responsibility for her great stuffed bear. We tried to tell her that I was the "J" in JB Bear but it didn't seem to register. We got down on the floor and played with the bear together and I told her about France and the little store in St. Remy de Provence where the bear appeared. I don't think she got it but she sure likes her furry pal.

I liked the dogs too.

It looks like I will be back in Houston when you are here and we can all get together for dinner. Brian is going to try and get up to see you this week while I am away in Texas and Montana. I am also going to call tomorrow. Gaylen says early morning is best before they haul you away for your therapy.

Speaking of therapy, keep at it. We have big plans for you in the months to come and we need you and that famous brain to be in tip top shape. I am sure it is a real pain and exhausting as well but you are up for it. You have a wonderful future ahead of you and so many people who want to share it with you.

John
